Clinical Hypnotherapy for Women's Health

Hypnotherapy and guided imagery has been used for hundreds of years to enhance women’s health during all life-stages. There are records of hypnosis going back 2,500 years in ancient China and Egypt and today, thanks to better research methods and technologies, science has brought mind-body medicine and hypnosis more into the public eye. Today with neuro-imaging devices such as functional MRIs and PET scans, we can see inside the brain to view in real time what is happening when someone is experiencing hypnosis. With hypnosis we use the power of our minds to physically influence our brains for healing and enhancement of body, mind, and spirit.

A study conducted at Soraka University in Israel, found that hypnosis for fertility actually doubled the success of IVF treatment. Of those in the study group, 28% of the women who were hypnotised conceived, compared to 14% who were not hypnotised.

There is indeed clinical proof that hypnotherapy can assist women with infertility by helping them deal with the negative and harmful effects of stress and anxiety.

Period Problems

Stress, it’s the hidden culprit behind weight gain and body imbalances. Stress can cause difficulty with sleep, foggy brain, scattered thinking, headaches, increased cravings for unhealthy foods.

We think stress is a part of life and we should just deal with it. But stress and demands on our time are getting worse. With advances in technology, yes many things are easier, but there are also more expectations on our  time. Our phones follow us everywhere, we manage emails, text messages, facebook and the list goes on.

You may know some people who handle stress better than others, the difference is what the brain is doing in the background. We have habits of the brain that can make stress worse, or we can train the brain into the habits that make stress easier to handle.

Stress and trauma can adversely effect your periods and cycle.

Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea)

For those that experience normal menstrual periods with mild pain, it can be hard to believe how serious painful menstruation can be. Some women experience cramping and pain so severe they are unable to go to work, go to school, or care for their families. Pain can be accompanied by nausea, upset stomach, headaches and all over body aches and pains and can be severe enough to have an effect on overall health and wellbeing. Hypnotherapy can help you learn to control the pain, and resume a normal life at times of the month when the pain seems unbearable.

Hormone Imbalances

Hormones have a powerful effect on women’s health and well-being and that imbalance can feel a bit like a rollercoaster. But the fantastic news is that hypnotherapy can help alleviate or eliminate those imbalances.

I specialise in treating hormonal imbalance in relation to Fertility, Pregnancy, Miscarriage, Menopause and any of the associated emotional and physical stresses that accompany these issues.

IVF / In Vitro Fertilisation

If you’re going through IVF, hypnotherapy can help you to achieve a deep level of relaxation that could significantly reduce your stress levels. Hypnosis for IVF and fertility treatment can help you to prepare mentally, physically and emotionally. It can assist you in making lifestyle changes or eliminating any fears you may have. It will also help reduce anxiety about miscarriage, and how to cope better with any unsuccessful outcome. Research has shown that being relaxed during medical procedures can improve success rates. Feeling depressed before IVF has been linked to lower success rates also. Hypnosis can help you feel more positive about the procedure and the outcome.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS) - How hypnosis can help?

PCOS is a condition that affects a woman’s hormone levels. It often takes the form of higher-than-normal levels of male hormones, known as androgens, such as testosterone. This hormone imbalance causes women to skip menstrual periods, and generally leads to difficulty falling pregnant.

The condition is manifested by many, small fluid-filled sacs, or cysts, which grow inside the ovaries. Studies have shown these cysts to be follicles, each one containing an immature egg which never ripens to promote ovulation. When you don’t ovulate, the levels of estrogen and progesterone are much lower, while the levels of androgens are significantly higher.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is best described as a condition which involves cysts in the ovaries, raised levels of male hormones, and irregular periods. It is estimated that the syndrome affects about 30% of women during their childbearing years.

Symptoms of PCOS.

The symptoms may be mild at first, and sometimes not even noticed. However, with time things will get worse, and will need medical attention.

Here are some of the common symptoms associated with PCOS.

·      Very irregular periods.

·      Acne-like skin breakouts.

·      Unexplained weight gain.

·      Thinning hair on the scalp.

·      Distressing, excessive hair growth on the face and body.

·      Frequent bouts of depression and anxiety which may come and go.

·      Serious problems with fertility when trying to fall pregnant.

·      Painful, enlarged ovaries.

Doctors do not know exactly what causes PCOS, but some studies indicate that genetics may be involved, as well as insulin resistance, and higher than normal levels of inflammation in the body.

How is PCOS treated?

First off, note that PCOS does not need surgical treatment. Unless you need to have the ovaries totally removed, surgery will not be necessary.

There are other treatments available which can help, such as:

·      A healthy eating plan can help to relieve the symptoms, and also promote weight loss. Obesity is known to increase inflammation in the body, which is a potential cause of PCOS.

·      Cut out high-carb refined and sugary foods which are known to cause inflammation.

·      Increase intake of healthy foods which decrease inflammation, such as tomatoes, green leafy veggies, olive oil, nuts, and fatty fish like tuna and salmon.

·      Because PCOS is mainly the result of a hormone imbalance, restoring the balance of the hormones, is potentially the best the best treatment for successfully dealing with the physical symptoms.

Are there other symptoms beside physical symptoms?

Yes, there are. Studies have shown that an abundance of women are affected by emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. These are usually the result of appearance issues, like excess belly fat, facial hair growth, loss of head hair, and an inability to fall pregnant, which may all lead to depression and moodiness.

Health practitioners have now realised that stress management is a critical part of any treatment for PCOS to relieve symptoms, whether it be hormonal, or lifestyle changes.

The recommended way to manage emotional issues.

A number of PCOS issues are now proven to be associated with your emotional state, and there is a consensus of agreement among some health experts that hypnotherapy treatment be recommended to help cope with emotional problems.

Antidepressant medications may be prescribed, but these meds have their own set of side effects, and do not get to the root cause of the problem. Furthermore, if you are indeed battling to conceive, antidepressants are known to decrease libido, which will make it even more difficult to get pregnant.

Hypnotherapy works through accessing the subconscious mind to begin a healing process of the negative mental state related to self-esteem and other PCOS issues. It is a superb way to help you cope with the emotional symptoms of PCOS.

Here are some of the ways hypnotherapy can help you.

·      Help you stick to a healthy eating plan that will result in weight reduction.

·      Gets to the root of the stress and depression related to PCOS, and helps you to change your  n             mindset from negative to positive.

·      Guide you in restoring you confidence and self-esteem issues, by helping you to overcome                   appearance concerns.

·      Show you how to get a good night’s sleep using relaxation techniques.

Another bonus is that recent studies have shown that by using certain relaxation methods, hypnotherapy may help to increase fertility prospects.

In conclusion.

Medical science has agreed that PCOS symptoms are not only a matter of physical issues like ovarian cysts and hormonal imbalance, but also has a major mental and emotional impact.
